Chapter 28

Lacey

Waking up early the next day and by how much my head was rattling, you’d think I’d been revelling and drinking champagne for the entire night before. And maybe a little was the champagne, but I knew the pounding that was smashing at my brain was more to do with the magic I created.

Then again, maybe it was because Kane and Ryan sandwiched me between them and I needed to get away but not wake them. That was a task because Kane had his arms encased around me, possessive as always, but I got used to that. But last night was different.

It was the first time in a while we’d slept in the same bed. We’d stopped sleeping together after one night. For me, sharing a bed with four others, and large men at that, wasn’t the best idea for a restful night’s sleep. But when we got back from the ceremony, I didn’t want to be alone. It already terrified me I could have lost Carter for good, and I wanted to feel my knights around me, holding them tight.

I glanced at the hands over my body and started with lifting Kane’s wrist off my waist and lowering it gingerly onto his leg. Then there was Ryan’s arm that was draped over my hip and I’d slept pressed into his chest.

No wonder my head was thumping. Perhaps it wasn’t the magic, but the lack of oxygen that made me feel like shit.

Then I had to lift Kane’s arm again as it made its way back as I rearranged Ryan’s arm and after unravelling myself from multiple limbs, I slinked my body in little bursts of movement, trying to wriggle away from both men without waking them. Finally, I shuffled myself down through two sets of legs and escaped, sneaking off the foot end of the bed.

Looking back at Ryan and Kane, I smiled, but wondered where Seb was.

I clicked the door shut to my bathroom. Luckily, it made the quietest of sound. Switched on the shower, had the quickest wash in my life, and rubbed the towel over my skin. Once I dried off and brushed my teeth, I put on a pair of clean pyjamas, and sneaked out of the room.

I trudged into the kitchen and squinted at the rising morning sun before I flicked the power on for the coffee machine—I needed caffeine and right now. Because I'd woken up feeling a little sorry for myself, I tossed and turned for a few hours this morning, going over and over last night’s event in my head. But knew it was Carter I should feel sorry for.

He was the one the Dark King was trying to kill.

“There are things you need to know, things that you are going to find hard to hear, and tonight you made things a lot worse.”

What did Clay mean? My need to vomit meant I never stopped and thought his words over, but I expected sometime today I was going to find out just how badly I’d made everything.
